Chester Street

The background story-

This home is located in Detroit USA and was purchased by the owners whilst they were still living in Australia. Birdblack Design was engaged to transform this rainbow painted 3 storey home into a modern masterpiece.

The design of the home and selection of all of the fixtures and finishes were selected in Australia. The details of which were then sent to the builder who executed our design to the highest of detail.

Our home owners have a young son so it was imperative that this be a home fit for a family but also fit for their love of entertaining.

This ensuite was part of the Master bedroom suite. We wanted to create the look of an opulent parents retreat. The existing skylights within the space were replaced with new ones to ensure natural light flooded into every corner of the space. We opened up the old walk in robe creating a vast open plan space.

The ensuite is open in design with designated areas throughout. We’ve provided privacy to the areas needed, the toilet is within its own room with framed glass door. The shower/steam room sits adjacent the toilet room, enclosed with floor to ceiling tiled mosaics.

The wardrobe areas were to be split between husband and wife. The husband’s robe is located in the adjoining master bedroom. While the wife’s robe is a walk in wonderland that works harmoniously with the ensuite space. New ducted ventilation and heated floors allow us to have a partially open style robe as there is no condensation or moisture build up. Her robe was meticulously designed to fit every pair of heels, boots, long dresses, gym clothes, work clothes, purses, jewellery etc that she owned.

We’ve utilised the full ceiling height for the robes to maximise our space, leaving plenty of room for hanging and folded clothing items. The dresser which sits directly behind the vanity units houses her jewellery, accessories and under garments. The top of this unit is glass so that jewellery pieces are displayed within easy to see and reach access.

Back on the bathroom side we have a dual vanity unit with corian benchtop and framed mirror unit. Built within the mirror framing is pop-up powerpoints for easy access for hairdryers and electric shavers. Parallel to the vanity is the makeup station. Our client wanted a space that she could sit down at and apply her makeup of a morning whilst still being close to the basins.

The feature of the room has to be the freestanding Napoli bath, which sits adorned by the soft grey geometric glass mosaic tiles and natural light from the window above. On either side of the bath is mirror faced full height cupboards which store her purses and bags.

Given that we had a beautiful pitched ceiling to work with I really wanted to accentuate the height by drawing your eye upwards. This was achieved by our feature lighting. Over the bath sits a black angled Agnes chandelier. Above each basin is a black Flos string light. The placement of these lights with their string element create an architectural feature whilst still providing functional light.

This is a huge transformation from the former yellow timber, mural painted walls with slate covered floor. Upon entering you now get a sense of immense space and openness. The lightness of the materials used with accompanying grey concrete look floor tiles and dark timber robes together create a luxurious outlet for our home owners.
