One of our dear friends (who shall remain nameless) ventured along one day with Owner and Founder, Sarah Nolen, onsite to one of the Birdblack Design projects. As Sarah happily pointed out the empty rooms and spaces, stating different area names, Sarah stood in a particular zone and declared, “… and this will be the Mudroom!”
Our dear friend was utterly confused. She wondered to herself: “1: This doesn’t seem a large enough space to house a mud bath? And 2: Why is it so close to the front door??”
And this, my friends, is why we write blogs!
So, what is a Mudroom? Contrary to our delightfully unaware little friend’s thoughts; a Mudroom does not house a mud bath but is a designated room, nook or zone designed to be an organised transitional space from the outdoors, in. It is a space to hang hats, coats and umbrellas; store keys and handbags; remove dirty football boots or even store your surfboards and skateboards.
A Mudroom should act as a segue from the outside world into the home, whether via the garage or the front door – depending on what is best for you and your household. It is a cleverly innovated space designed to assist with cleanliness, organisation and household structure. We all know what it is like to be running late and stuck looking for keys, wallets or a child’s other shoe!
‘Dixon Residence’ has place for school bags on hooks and a benchseat with shelving underneath: perfect for removing shoes and socks. Our clients chose to incorporate a Study Nook into their Mudroom so that the children can easily sit and complete homework. Talk about an organised little piece of heaven! “The dog ate my homework” isn’t an option in this household, that’s for certain.
At ‘Sea Spray Residence’, the Mudroom is directly opposite the Guest Powder Room, making it a perfect space for house guests to drop off their belongings when visiting. This also saves guests space in the Guest Bedroom, which is always appreciated.
A Mudroom can range from an entire 4-walled room for a large family to a designated, organised nook for a single home owner. The size of a Mudroom ultimately depends on the size of the home, along with the number of the household occupants. Birdblack Design receives numerous requests for Mudrooms for families. It brings organisation to the chaos of school mornings, after-school sports and extra-curricular activities. Each member of the family may be allocated a cubicle, cupboard or drawer.
To ensure we design the perfect Mudroom for a household, Birdblack Design considers the following:
1. How many people need to be catered for?
2. Robe hooks? Hanging rails? Coat racks?
3. Hampers? Drawers? Benchseat?
4. Exact dimensions: what existing items need to be stored here?
5. How can we make use of dead corners and wasted space?
Making clever use of wasted space, we designed this Mudroom underneath the staircase. Opting for cubicles, Birdblack Design made use of the awkward space around the stair treads at ‘Cato Residence’. This transformation worked beautifully for our clients and their busy lifestyle.
Whether you are a large family, a single home-owner or a young couple, organisation is crucial for a successful and fruitful life.
If your lifestyle can be a little manic, let Birdblack Design help organise your home with a Mudroom, a Study Nook and some very practical storage.
We will turn your manic into MAGIC!
