Meet the Team: Sarah

Sarah is of course the name and face of Birdblack Design! As Owner and Founder, she has grown BD from a baby business with just herself as an employee to a flourishing and incredibly successful business with five staff to help her celebrate Birdblack Design’s upcoming 6th Birthday in June!

Now whilst you may know a little about her if you have our Instagram stories or have followed BD for a while, this blog is definitely going to highlight who Sarah is outside of the Birdblack Design Studio.

First and foremost, Sarah is married to Birdblack Design’s muscle man and engineering genius, Dave Nolen. They celebrated their 6th Wedding Anniversary on Australia Day with plenty of family and friends at ‘Grenache Residence’!

Fun fact: Sarah’s brother Jack fell in love with Dave’s sister Halie; and they ended up getting married too!

Both Sarah and Dave love family and friends to be heavily involved in their lives. The Nolen’s attend (read: cyber attend in the time of Covid restrictions) Awaken Church in the Regent Theatre, Wollongong. Dave is a huge AFL footy buff, so the Wollongong Lions AFL Club have become another huge part of their lives. Sarah is always excited to hang out with the WAGS (wives and girlfriends). At Grand Final time, you will find the Awaken crew cheering Dave and his team to victory!

Awaken Church are family! Both extended families live in Canberra where Sarah and Dave hail from, but at Awaken they have inherited a family of 400!

Sarah has always loved to travel, sourcing inspiration from multiple continents, different cultures and diverse ways of life. The plan is to explore Armenia and Azerbaijan next!

At the time of Sarah’s stay, ‘Casa Colombo’ in Sri Lanka was voted Best Boutique Hotel in the world.

It is not always bells and whistles for Sarah though – she has put up her hand for plenty of humanitarian work as well as missionary work through her Christian faith.

Read more on all these ventures in the “Our Community” tab on our website.

A very special Christmas production at a Montessori School in Sri Lanka.

Travel doesn’t always need to be international; Sarah adores domestic travel as well.

With family and friends and a passion for travel, how do you incorporate the two?
By entertaining regularly with plenty of food and copious amounts of wine, of course!

Sarah claims, “Some people collect shoes, some people collect art; I collect wine”.
Her wine palette was awoken abroad in South Africa, and she has been collecting ever since!

Morgenhof Estate, in Stellenbosch, South Africa: Sarah’s favourite winery.

Now you know where Sarah’s inspiration in fashion, art, food, wine and DESIGN comes from! Her personality is as colourful as her style and your home or commercial space can have some of that pizzazz we all know and love.
