What even is a Mudroom?!
Essentially, your mudroom is a designated space for dropping off shoes, bags and keys upon entering your home. What could be an absolute dumping ground for most, can be an absolute dream for Birdblack Design. Your mudroom acts as a segue from the outdoors through to the interior of your home, and a clever space to aid in cleanliness, organisation and household structure when it comes to busy lives. We all know what it is like to be running late and stuck looking for keys, wallets or a child’s other shoe!
What better way to enter your home than with a clean, organised storage space? Your mudroom is generally in close proximity to your entrance (front or back) and acts as the home for all your essential items for entering and exiting the home, like umbrellas, coats and hats.

A mudroom can range from an entire 4-walled room for a large family to a designated, organised nook for a single homeowner. The size of a mudroom ultimately depends on the size of the home, along with the number of the household occupants.
Birdblack Design receives numerous requests for Mudrooms for families. It brings organisation to the chaos of school mornings, after-school sports and extra-curricular activities. It is often requested that each member of the family is allocated a cubicle, cupboard or drawer. Of course this is only possible where space permits. We know a family of 7 whose mudroom is designated per household member and is an absolute storage DREAM…but with 5 children, organisation is most definitely key to running that household!

At our ‘Cato Place’ residence, we designed a communal mudroom nook underneath the staircase. This transformation did this working family wonders. Although the mudroom nook is quite small, we designed in practical joinery doubling as an entry console.

To design the perfect mudroom for a household, we consider the following:
1. Number of people requiring use the space?
2. Whether clients prefer robe hooks or a hanging rail?
3. Should a benchseat be incorporated within the design?
4. Size of existing items being stored within the space?
Once we have received all the information required from our clients, we head to the studio, sketch up ideas and then draw up the design, to the very millimetre on our CAD program. Believe us when we say every inch of space is utilised.
Of course, practicality isn’t the only design factor. It is essential to keep the home’s overall style, colour scheme and materials in mind. As our ‘Cato Place’ mudroom was in close proximity to the kitchen, we chose colours, materials and finishes ensuring a seamless flow throughout the spaces.

Birdblack Design chooses to work only with high quality joiners to execute our vision. Our reputable joiners manufacture and install joinery, staying true to our designs.

If you are a long-term follower of Birdblack Design, then you know how passionate we are about making every inch of your home practical, all the while maintaining minimalist, spacious designing. Dead corners and wasted space are not how we roll!

Whether you are a large family, a single home-owner or a young couple, organisation is crucial for a successful and fruitful life. Let us create the perfect Mudroom for you and turn your mess into magic!
