Australia. This amazing country treats us with spectacular weather all year round – from warm spring breezes to blissfully hot summer days; crisp autumn afternoons to foggy winter mornings.
We often take for granted the pleasure of waking up to lush green scenery all around us as we enjoy our morning cup of tea. Equally, as we unwind at the end of a busy day with a glass of wine, the birds tweet their sunset songs and the sky is painted in colour as the moon arrives. The best part, of course, is that you can enjoy all of this from the comfort of your own home.
This week’s Birdblack Design“Great Outdoors” reveal is of course our ‘Spring Street Balcony Design’ in picturesque Mount Kembla.
In Australia, we also often experience weather extremities. We navigate our way through heatwaves; we are exposed to strong hazardous winds and horrendous storms, and every now and then we are rewarded with the best weather of all – sunshowers! With homely outdoor areas being exposed to all the elements, it is imperative that high quality, outdoor specific materials are used within these outdoor areas. Even if the space has shelter, this only partially protects from the elements.
When living in coastal towns, metal finishes must be considered. Birdblack Design believes marine grade stainless steel is essential. It is equally important to consider the flooring, the joinery materials and your outdoor furniture choices, including the outdoor cushions. If you don’t invest in good quality products, you will unfortunately find yourself requiring replacements every few years.
The existing outdoor space on Spring St in Mount Kembla was very stock standard – lacking style and appeal. Our client’s desire was to have this balcony space transformed to work spectacularly in conjunction with the open-plan home interior, which we were already designing. We transported the colour scheme and design concepts from the interior right through to the exterior, creating consistency and ultimately merging the two separate areas into one whole, liveable space.
When it comes to outdoor kitchens, the options are endless. Like our soon-to-be-revealed ‘Benjamin Road’ project, you may opt for a full-blown second kitchen. Or, like ‘Spring Street’, you can keep it super simple with a BBQ and plenty of storage for all the outdoor cooking essentials.Let’s be honest – who doesn’t like a good Aussie BBQ?! Our ‘Benjamin Road’ clients wanted the works: a sink, an oven, an outdoor fridge. However, all families are different and have different needs. Our ‘Spring Street’ project opted for the second, more simplistic design: a family orientated BBQ. Their existing balcony space was a little limited for a full kitchen, but in reality, the home kitchen is barely 10 metres from the balcony rendering doubled outdoor cooking services a non-essential. For a little extra inspiration, we would like to leave you with the thought of outdoor woodfire pizza ovens – for that extra little bit of luxury living!
The showstopper on the ‘Spring Street’ balcony is definitely the custom laser cut screens, featuring an oversized floral design. The laser cut screens not only provide the function of a balustrade, but possess a striking patterned focal point, allowing light both onto the balcony and into the home without obstructing the view. This sculptural design element is visible throughout the open-plan living of the interior. Large doors between the interior and exterior allow for seamless indoor-outdoor design.
Outdoor living is such a large part of the Australian way of life, whether sitting outside on a beautiful day or spending time in your garden. To make the most of your own personal great outdoors, invest in an interior designer and watch your outdoor spaces spring to life.
