Dr Lauren Bowman is reinventing Women’s Health in our nation’s capital, Canberra, ACT. A registered Osteopath, Lauren desired to create a treatment centre with a huge focus on reproductive health and all the potential issues that may come along with that, both pre-natal and post-natal.
Fundamental Health found its home in an old IT office with multiple separated rooms. Birdblack Design opted to knock down almost every single internal wall in order to create 4 spacious treatment rooms, the main reception, the staff kitchenette and main bathroom for the clinic.
Lauren was very firm on requiring large treatment rooms as Osteopathy involves a lot of bodily movement during therapy, so adequate space is essential. Each treatment room includes a change area, a storage space and room for the therapist’s desk space and chairs. Lauren has also researched extensively on the importance of natural lighting during therapy and so Birdblack Design designed in skylights to bring a beautiful balance of both artificial and natural lighting.
Fundamental Health desires a homely aesthetic as opposed to a sterile medical clinic; something that communicates, “I am here to help you”. By choosing clever materials and a soothing colour palette; home, hope and care is communicated to all patients.
By incorporating beautiful Carrara marble, this lends immediately a homely feel, significantly removed from a clinical, sterile aesthetic. By introducing a luxurious feel, Lauren hopes her patients will experience a more relaxed transition within her clinic.
Of course, this IS a medical clinic, so hygiene is absolutely imperative. Birdblack Design opted for a vinyl plank flooring with a warm timber look. Utilising planks means the flooring is easily replaceable, piece by piece. In addition, this flooring is a lovely, soft material, suitable for Osteopaths who stand up all day. Underfoot comfort is very important for staff. Other cost effective materials utilised in this clinic include Tasmanian Oak, as well as sustainable plywood.
Fundamental Health’s colour palette includes a calming navy blue and a gorgeous peachy pink coupled with a divine aquamarine green and a brilliant crisp white. Paint is a simple and cost effective way to bring colour into commercial spaces. Birdblack Design thinks this palette is a winning combination!
Many women entering Fundamental Health are feeling vulnerable and concerned. Birdblack Design feels privileged to be a part of the process, making these women feel safe and cared for.
A note from the owner:
Sarah and the team have been excellent in our commercial build in Canberra. The design is stunning and exactly what we were after. Sarah has designed a space that is welcoming and warm...and much bigger than we expected!
