Girvan Residence

Our home owners engaged Birdblack Design in two separate stages to recreate parts of their 1960's brick home. In 2017, Birdblack Design was able to do their Bathroom and toilet room; in 2019, we revamped their entire Kitchen, Living Room and Dining Room areas.

Our clients love travelling; Morocco a favourite. Therefore our brief for the initial 2017 Bathroom was Moroccan-inspired. In 2019, we continued this theme in the Kitchen and open-plan space. As Morocco is famous for its bold colours and patterns, the result was a perfect blend of a Moroccan / Coastal fusion with the gorgeous feature colour: teal! Pops of the striking teal are featured throughout on numerous occasions, partnered with whites and solid Blackbutt timber.

The spectacularly bold teal v-groove cabinetry is one of the main focal points of the Kitchen space, as are the hand-blown glass pendants clustered above the timber Dining Table. These beautiful pendants are an artistic addition within the space, picking up the teal colour and formalising the Dining Area. The ceiling in this grand open-plan space features three skylights. These magnificent skylights allow natural lighting to brilliantly flow throughout the space.

The Kitchen features a large Kitchen Island, acting as a subtle divide between the Kitchen and Living Room, and perfect for prepping meals. This island features an abundant amount of storage - even a washing machine! Our home owners imagine their old age in this abode and so a laundry downstairs would be impractical for them in the future.

Yet another bold Moroccan-pattern inspiration is found in the encaustic-look tile utilised as the splashback. This tile features an ocean blue and white colourway, pairing perfectly with the bold teal cabinetry. Encaustic-look tiles are popular in Morocco’s architecture and interiors.

The initial Bathroom project was inspired by the owners’ Moroccan hand basin. Birdblack Design love infusing our clients’ personalities into the spaces they will use on a daily basis. We love the reflection and knowing that we create unique, individual and personalised homes.

Our finishes and fixtures were selected to complement the Moroccan basin. We sourced all the tapware and accessories in a custom living rustic bronze finish which reflects a vintage touch. This works in harmony with the Corian Basil benchtop and the white joinery finish which receives pops of colour through the use of ceramic hand-painted Moroccan cabinet knobs.

One of the most important elements introduces pops of colour into the space are the two stained-glass windows which echo the Moroccan influence. Both windows were custom-made, reflecting the colours and patterns found in the feature basin; a beautiful statement, capturing the eye as you step into the Bathroom.
