Birdblack Design was engaged by our clients in Kiama to design a stylish new kitchen within the new extension of their home. Our clients have a distinct love for the beautifully delicate French Provincial style. We wanted to locate the kitchen in the middle of the new wing so that it provided space for a formal lounge and dining area on one side and an informal lounge and dining area on the other side: the very best of both worlds.
The building design lent itself to a big open space with a high-pitched ceiling and natural light flooding in from many angles. We were also involved in the detailed process of designing each of the hand-crafted timber windows and doors. This exquisite detailing pays homage to the formality of the interior.
The kitchen’s layout afforded itself to a gallery-style design, allowing access to the space from every vantage point. The kitchen functions as an entertainer’s kitchen with our Birdblack Design essentials: sufficient storage and adequate preparation space. The kitchen island, which spans 4.5metres, is the sculptural centrepiece of this entire wing of the home.
We wanted to refine our selections by using a crisp white for the cabinetry, keeping it light and expansive. Finer details like the shaker profile doors, the beautifully designed handles and knobs adorning each cupboard, and the drawer fronts help to visually layer the kitchen with elegant sophistication. The simplicity of the white allows for the striking benchtop and splashback captivating the necessary attention needed in a kitchen this size.
Overall, this design could easily be transported to a villa in France… all we need now is that glass of Bordeaux!
