This client worked with JIH Building Design to do the base plan of their home, but for that extra luxurious feel, Birdblack Design was engaged. We designed both the Ground Floor (the Living Wing of the home) and the Upper Floor (the Bedroom Wing).
Immediately as you come into the home, you are greeted with a grand entry and a large oversized staircase to ascend to the Upper Floor. The Ground Floor consists of an enormous open-plan space for living and entertaining. This family hosts events weekly, with between 16 and 20 guests at any time, so both space and functionality are imperative for this busy and fun-loving family.
The Living Wing includes the formal dining and lounge rooms, the kitchen, a butler’s pantry, the laundry, an informal dining room, study and the family room. This space is excessively open-plan, with no doors separating any of the rooms. This makes this entire space easy to walk through, particularly when entertaining and carrying multiple platters of food and drinks. Every vantage point of this open space displays cohesion throughout and the many highlight windows allow plenty of natural light to flood the rooms, bouncing light off many of our stunning features.
The Bedroom Wing is on the Upper Floor. In this wing, we designed the Master Bedroom with walk-in robe, ensuite and study nook. This nook is perfect for the working family working at night; providing the ability to be close to the family, without being distracting. The Master Bedroom maintains the beautiful Oak timbers and materials featured throughout the rest of the home. The Bedroom Wing is custom designed to the exact requirements of their brief. Within the ensuite, we find a gorgeous double basin, and a divine shimmer tile acting as a feature wall. Zoning works within this open-plan Bedroom space by moving from tile flooring onto plush carpet.
Back downstairs, we wander through the Dining and Lounge rooms. These two rooms are zoned from up above by strategically designed bulkheads, providing a structural hold for the Upper Floor. You notice immediately the amount of space, ensuring there is adequate space for 20 people to mingle and move around the room effortlessly without bumping into the furniture also required for entertaining huge groups of people.
Birdblack Design was engaged at the end of the build for Furniture Selections, so we truly were able to provide for this family perfectly, completely understanding their requirements and design brief.
Stunning brass and marble are evident throughout the Ground Floor, as are the glass, black and metallic finishes which trail throughout the home, including in all the feature lighting.
The Bar in the Dining Room is a notable feature. We desired the Dining Room to be dark and moody; giving it far more formal and luxurious aesthetic. Dark timber grounds this space, whilst utilising a mirror splashback opens the space, allowing light to bounce throughout the room. Of course, ‘Redgum Ridge’ opted for Australian custom made furniture to suit their monumental entertaining needs.
Speaking of entertaining, let’s now move to the Kitchen area which includes the kitchen, a butler’s pantry and the laundry. Here the Kitchen Island is the main focal point. We note the beautiful dark chocolate tones and the breakfast bar bringing warmth into the space. The flooring is a fabulous timber tile, bringing the warmth of timber, but not the maintenance. Tiling is much more user friendly. The stunning glass and matte black pendant lights are fluid throughout this entire living space.
A quaint Family Room just off the kitchen is complete with a double-sided fireplace. Within this room, we utilised existing mustard yellow furniture and maintained the warm palette with mustard, gold and green accents throughout. Next to the Family Room is the informal Dining Room for the immediate family to utilise on a daily basis as opposed to disrupting the formal spaces for a casual Tuesday morning breakfast.
The Living Wing is complete with a Guest Bedroom Suite with bathroom, study nook / dresser and walk-in robe. There is also a Powder Room and additional bathrooms for all their regular guests. Within the bathrooms, you discover stunning oak timber and gorgeous shimmery metallic tiles in all bathrooms creating cohesion in every wet space. These shimmering tiles are most definitely a wow factor within the home. Every bathroom also features striking black and geometric copper pendant lighting as well as warm toned marble-look porcelain.
