‘Sandy Foot Residence’ is home to a young family: two fitness industry entrepreneurs and their two young children. This couple desired a vibrant Modern Industrial home, perfect for entertaining and raising their family for years to come.
Our clients had purchased this block, demolished the existing home and thus ‘Sandy Foot Residence’ is a brand new build. Though the brief is Modern Industrial, given the stunning beach views and our clients passions for beach lifestyle, Birdblack Design ensured that we infused this throughout their home in terms of artworks.
Let’s take the Full Home tour!
Our clients’ front door is a Pivot Door, painted in a rust texture. Due to their location opposite the ocean, the sea-salt will oxidise this door, causing textural changes, allowing the door to age with the home and the family. Divine!
Directly opposite the entry is an exposed, textured recycled brick wall. The existing bricks feature old sign writing, giving a nudge to the past, and allowing a piece of history to be found in a brand new home.
Immediately as you come in the front door, the Rumpus Room is to the left and specifically catered for the couple’s young children. This room acts as a break out space whilst mum and dad are entertaining. With abstract cushions, pops of colour and rust-coloured ottomans, this room is perfect in allowing kids to be kids!
Keeping this Guest Bedroom simple, Birdblack Design specified a gorgeous oak four-poster bed with lovely blue and khaki linens to match. The continuity of oak throughout the home exists within this room as well, including the lovely bedside table and the sturdy lamp stand.
Tucked behind the stairs, is the Laundry of the home, leading straight out to the clothesline. Again, complementary joinery is found in this room with full height cabinetry, including a pull-out ironing board and excess storage for mops, brooms and the like. Opposite the cabinetry are the appliances, the hanging rail and the sink. We love a functional laundry that doesn’t sap away your happiness!
Our clients have two small children: a little girl and a younger boy. Due to their age, we worked around their existing beds – all parents know how important beds are to young children and sleeping! The trick was then to design bedrooms around young children that will grow with them over the next ten years as the approach their teenage years. Birdblack Design is all about longevity!
The Main Bathroom features a stunning freestanding bath, a large oversized shower and basin. It includes a separate toilet and basin, allowing guests to utilise this bathroom, as well as the children on a day-to-day basis.
The solid oak timber bench top with open drawers underneath is perfect for putting clothes whilst showering and doubles perfectly as a seat for the young children whilst getting ready. With the growing children in mind, we specified plenty of storage in this bathroom knowing that as the children enter their teenage years, their toiletries will become much more diverse, and the extra space we provided now will be excellently utilised in years to come.
Throughout this entire wing is a very stylish dark chocolate engineered oak timber flooring.
As with the reclaimed brick wall just downstairs from this space, in this room, we utilised a reclaimed timber cladding around the stunning fireplace.
To bring softness into this space, we have utilised blush pink as a highlight colour by way of the lounge and cushions to match. As with the Rumpus Room directly underneath, Birdblack Design utilised sheer curtains to bring privacy when required. When the curtains are open, however, that ocean view is nothing short of breathtaking!
The Dining Room picks up the features of the Lounge Room with the same gorgeous sheer linen curtains and the fabulous blush pink custom concrete Dining Table. The harmony in this open plan space is divine.
Kitchen and WIP
The reclaimed timber hallway stretches from the Kitchen all the way down past TWO hidden rooms (Walk in Pantry and Powder Room) through to the Master Bedroom. Solid timber is present in both the breakfast bar and open shelving.
We paired all this beautiful timber with stunning blacks: sleek black concrete for the Kitchen bench top and two very eye-catching black cylinder rangehoods. The splashback tile showcases the cylinders offering different patterns in each tile, adding variation and texture. Adding in greenery throughout really makes this Modern Industrial Kitchen POP!
Heading down the reclaimed timber hallway, you might discover the second secret door. The hidden room is the Powder Room for guests. Generally Powder Rooms are a small bathroom with a toilet and basin, however true to Birdblack Design style; we provided extra storage in this space. Thinking in terms of longevity, the young children will eventually grow up into their teenage years and this Powder Room provides another space to change or get ready in the morning.
Master Bedroom Suite inc. Ensuite and Walk-in Robe
The Suite entry is a vestibule with a console table to drop your keys, phone and wallet onto. From the entry, this Master Bedroom Suite is designed in a loop so that the three zones, the Bedroom, the Ensuite and the Robes are all intertwined with functional access between all three.
In the Bedroom, a whimsical wallpaper accentuates the oversized ceiling. We kept this space very simple in design, accentuating the relaxed space and not over-complicating. Solid oak is evident throughout, keeping in line with the rest of the home and the blush pink and terracotta tones soften the space.
The Walk-In Robe to the left of the suite entry has our clients’ requirements in mind – shoes, bags, clothes, fitness gear. Everything is specified perfectly and within arm’s reach from the Ensuite, providing easy access to clothing in the morning. No more morning rushes in this suite!
We saved the best for last, as Birdblack Design simply adores the Master Ensuite! We specified a boutique hotel aesthetic for this space. The double vanity with floating storage underneath provides space for our clients to breathe whilst getting ready. Black is the highlight for the metal finishes with classic black tapware and black accessories throughout.
An exquisite freestanding bath sits with a floating timber shelf, fabulous for candles and products to sit on. Wrapping around is a niche in the bath wall and the shower wall, providing functional storage for all the bath and shower products as well as any decorative pieces for display. The shower is gorgeously oversized and the toilet sits perfectly behind a frosted glass door for privacy.
