Colour, pattern and texture: this Moroccan-inspired Kitchen has it all!

This Kitchen renovation was stage two for our home owner. Two years ago, this 1960's brick home was treated to a Birdblack Design Moroccan-inspired Bathroom remake.

The Kitchen renovation required redesigning the living areas: the Kitchen, the Living Room and the Dining Room. Due to the vintage home, these spaces were originally standard, individual rooms, all enclosed by walls, quite common for the era. Birdblack Design was engaged to bring a functional open-plan layout to the home that would capitalise on the available natural lighting. With all this natural lighting comes stunning views of Wollongong.

This homeowner has a great love of travelling; Morocco being a favourite. As the Bathroom was Moroccan-inspired, we wanted to continue this theme in the Kitchen and open-plan space. Morocco, famous for its bold colours and patterns, was the perfect inspiration for this home and resulted in this absolutely gorgeous teal Moroccan / Coastal fusion. Pops of the striking teal are featured throughout on numerous occasions, partnered with whites and solid Blackbutt timber.

The spectacular bold teal v-groove cabinetry is one of the main focal points of the space. We maximised the use of built in joinery, fitting out the joinery with practical mechanisms and organisation. All the drawers are electronic, opening and closing with complete ease.

Hand-blown glass pendants clustered above the timber Dining Table are another stunning feature in this home. These beautiful pendants are an artistic addition within the space, picking up the teal colour and formalising the Dining Area. The ceiling in this grand open-plan space features three skylights. These magnificent skylights allow natural lighting to brilliantly flow throughout the space.

The Kitchen features a large Kitchen Island, acting as a subtle divide between the Kitchen and Living Room, and perfect for prepping meals. Positioned above the Island is a custom-made linear timber pendant working hand-in-hand with the Blackbutt flooring and benchtop border. This island features an abundant amount of storage - even a washing machine! Our home owners imagine their old age in this abode and so a laundry downstairs would be impractical for them in the future.

Yet another bold Moroccan-pattern inspiration is found in the encaustic-look tile utilised as the splashback. This tile features an ocean blue and white colourway, pairing perfectly with the bold teal cabinetry. Encaustic-look tiles are popular in Morocco’s architecture and interiors.

Within the Living Room we designed a custom-upholstered bench seat. The upholstered top features a luscious teal velvet top. This seat is perfect for unwinding with a good book!

A breakfast seating area was installed in front of the window: the perfect location to enjoy the morning coffee, overlooking the escarpment. This space includes open shelves and display cabinetry for showcasing the homeowner’s travel treasures.
