Karimbla Residence

In 2018, Birdblack Design were engaged by our clients at ‘Karimbla Residence’ to begin Phase 1 of their renovations – their Main Bathroom and Ensuite. Here we are in 2020 presenting Phase 2: their Kitchen and Laundry!

‘Karimbla Residence’ is a townhouse structure, so existing walls proved a little tricky to work with. The Kitchen was subject to these constrictions, so Birdblack Design happily implemented our special style of creative design. In small spaces, we are always fond of floor to ceiling storage, utilising every inch of space. We are passionate about eliminating wasted space and ensuring functionality in dead corners. This particular kitchen had two dead corners, so we specified pull-out storage systems to maximise functionality.

Another fantastic feature are the appliance cupboards which open upwards, saving working bench space, instead of cupboards opening outwards. We incorporated a spices pull-out drawer as well as a pull-out for pantry staples like tea, coffee, sugar, flour canisters etc. The layout remained the same, keeping the stovetop on the back wall and the sink by the window, incorporating lovely new plantation shutters. We did however extend the Kitchen into the Living Space, inviting a much more open feel.

Utilising a black timber-grain laminate for the cabinetry creates a trick of the eye, elongating the space. The showstopper is the St Croix natural marble with an incredible vein feature. We like to describe it as almost a bird’s-eye view of Antarctic ice caps with all the stunning whites, blues and greys.

To set this Kitchen, Birdblack Design specified metal finishes. The rangehood is a brushed stainless steel cladding which pairs beautifully with the tap mixer as well as the under-mount double sink. The Zetr powerpoints also feature the stainless steel finish. To bring warmth to the space, we removed the tiles, installing Oak timber flooring, creating cohesion with the adjoining living spaces.

During all the selection process, our clients trusted Birdblack Design to choose materials and finishes which they would not have selected independently. We love clients that trust our experience, vision and knowledge. We are sure that you will agree: the results are divine.
