Located in the picturesque coastal town of Kiama NSW. Both home owners had owned several properties prior, but this was now the dream home where they can slowly wind down amongst the laid-back nature of the surrounding neighbourhood.
The design brief contained two parts. Upstairs was to be the ‘dream home’, a representation of their personalities and a place they could enjoy with their extended families.
Downstairs was to be converted from the dilapidated and unused space into rental accommodation.
Our clients have a love of bright colours and retro furniture. Given they live in a 70’s built brick home on the coast it was our job to tie all of these styles together. We wanted to keep a very classic look about the home that would be accented by existing furniture and some bold statements that tie the newly renovated rooms together.
New grey ironbark timber floors were installed upstairs and we opted for a shaker profile to the kitchen joinery in a satin white finish. Green is a feature throughout the new home and you can see we’ve used it on the back of the island bench and cooktop splashback. The benchtops are Smartstone Amara which provide a very soft marble look. The old kitchen was situated right in the middle of the house away for any external walls. We made use of the old slim sunroom and extended the kitchen into this space. New windows and doors were installed and the natural light now comes flooding in.
When we design we constantly look to the rooms adjoining the kitchen and bathrooms and see if there are options to better utilise the spaces together. In this case we were able to completely transform the old sunroom that was too skinny to even fit furniture in. By opening up this space we’ve now created an entertainer’s dream kitchen and the natural light that pours through this space breathes life into every nook and cranny.
We try not to limit ourselves by being blinkered by the existing parameters of an interior layout. We instead step back and think ok how can we really make these spaces work more functionally for our homeowners. There is no point investing a lot of time and money unless you’ve got the perfect solution lined up in replacement.
